Staunton OpenID Project

Objective:

The objective of this pilot project is to provide National Institute of Science and Technology (NIST) Level 2 Assurance by way of the OpenID Protocol.

This will provide the citizens of Staunton with unique access to developing Federal Government and health care resources as well as other services that require credentialed digital identity.

The Future:

Soon you will be able to use your Staunton OpenID to communicate with your favorite websites and the government.

Staunton OpenID uses WeOpenID Server which will be certified to act as a provider of identity to government and other Level 2 websites.

What is it?

In 1908 Staunton Virginia became the first city to have the Council Manager form of government. On July 4, 1993 Staunton became the second city to have a website, following Alta Vista, California. Paris, France, was the third city to have a site.

Now, Staunton is becoming the first city to provide its residents and businesses with OpenID accounts to credential their community membership and extend their digital identity. Your Staunton OpenID will only verify your residency. This will be a small but important part of your future digital footprint.

Your account is free and it will always be free. There may be optional premium services available in the future that require a small fee but these services will never be required in order to retain your Staunton OpenID account.

Who can join?

If you are a resident or business in the City of Staunton, you can join this experiment today for free, and even if you move away, you can keep your openID as a former resident. The OpenID Society, Washington DC, and Association Link Inc., a Staunton Internet Company, have joined together to explore how an existing municipality can use its digital identity to improve the lives of its citizens and businesses.

All information you submit is protected by encryption and you only need to provide your name and address in order to create a Staunton OpenID Account. Your information will not be shared without your express permission.

Once your residency is established your OpenID account will be activated. Mary Baldwin College students who reside in Staunton are welcome to join, they are an important part of our community and we encourage their participation.
